Berlin Brandenburg airport said on Thursday it closed its takeoff and landing runways because of unauthorized access by too many people, while a climate group said its activists had glued themselves to the asphalt.

Activists from the Last Generation environmental group called on the public to end air travel and for the government to stop subsidizing it, the group said Thursday.

Berlin police said on Twitter: “In an airport area that is not open to the public, we encountered several people who had previously gained unauthorized access and some had chipped themselves.”

An airport spokesman said that police had detained the workers, but that the runway was closed so that workers could be screened and further public attendance was ruled out.

The spokeswoman could not say how many flights were affected.
